In short

Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming is a guided audio method created by Rob Edmonds, Strategic Psychotherapist. You listen for about 20 minutes a day. It helps with the automatic response running underneath a habit or a feeling, rather than the habit itself, which is why there is nothing to practise and nothing to relive.

What it actually is

What happens when you press play

There is less to it than people expect, and that is deliberate.

You settle in, put your headphones in, and press play. That is the whole thing.

Rob talks. You listen. You do not have to concentrate, repeat anything, or say a word out loud. There is no homework between sessions and nothing to write down. Most people do it at the end of the day, when the mind is least busy arguing.

You may fall asleep partway through. It is fine if you drift off while listening, particularly when using a sleep session.

  • About 20 minutes, once a day
  • Nothing to say out loud and nothing to write
  • No homework between sessions
  • Falling asleep partway through is fine
  • We recommend listening consistently for at least 21 days

Why this approach is different

Because the pattern can happen before you have time to think about it

A clenched jaw. A racing mind at 2am. Reaching for the cigarette. Overthinking the same conversation again. Freezing when you need to focus.

Often, these responses feel automatic because they have been repeated so many times that they can happen before you consciously decide what to do.

That is also why simply telling yourself to stop, relax, think differently or try harder can be frustrating.

Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming takes a different approach.

Rather than asking you to constantly manage the behaviour on the surface, the sessions are designed to work with the automatic pattern underneath it.

  • You do not need to work out why it started
  • You do not need to relive the past
  • You do not need to analyse yourself
  • There is no homework or daily technique to remember
  • You simply get comfortable, press play and listen

The focus is not on changing who you are.

It is on helping you respond differently when the old pattern shows up.

Clearing it up

What this is not

Worth being straight about, because it gets confused with all four.

  • Not a meditation app

These are structured guided sessions rather than attention or awareness training. Each session is built to help with one specific response, and the sessions differ from each other because the patterns do.

  • Not talk therapy

There is no session where you explain yourself, and nothing is asked of you. The Mindshift Method does not require you to explain or retell your story during the audio session. The sessions focus on present-day patterns and responses.

  • Not a sleep soundtrack

Sessions are calming, and people do fall asleep in them. But the calm is a side effect rather than the product. These are structured guided sessions rather than background sleep sounds or music.

  • Not treatment, and not a diagnosis

This is not clinical treatment and it does not replace your doctor, a psychologist, or any medication you are on. It sits alongside them. Plenty of people use it while already seeing someone.

Where it sits

How the Mindshift Method fits

The Mindshift Method App is designed as a self-guided tool for personal development, wellbeing and pattern change.

For some people it may be used on its own for everyday concerns such as stress, sleep, confidence, focus or habits.

For others it may sit alongside work with a GP, psychologist, psychiatrist, counsellor, therapist, coach or another appropriately qualified professional.

The Mindshift Method is not designed to compete with or replace professional healthcare. It provides another practical way to work on recurring patterns and reinforce behavioural change in everyday life.

Being honest about it

Who this suits, and who it does not

It is not for everyone, and it is cheaper for both of us to say so here.

It tends to suit you if

  • You know what you should be doing and still do not do it
  • The same pattern keeps coming back no matter what you try
  • Your sleep has gone and your head will not switch off at night
  • You want something practical without months of talking
  • You would rather not go back over the past to move forward

It probably does not suit you if

  • You want a diagnosis or a clinical assessment
  • You are looking for someone to talk to each week
  • You want the cause explored rather than the response changed
  • You are not able to give it about 20 minutes most days
  • You are in crisis and need help now

If things are bad right now, please do not start with an app. In Australia, Lifeline is on 13 11 14 and the Suicide Call Back Service is on 1300 659 467, both free and both open all night. This work is designed for the long grind, not for an emergency.

Rob was nineteen and could not speak in front of a room. Not nervous, genuinely unable, and it was costing him exams. He tried something he had run out of reasons not to try, and a few sessions sorted it. It worked in a way that annoyed him slightly, because it should not have been that straightforward. That quietly shaped everything after it.

He trained at the Institute of Applied Psychology in Sydney and went on to create Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming, part of the MindShift Method. He writes and voices every session in the library himself, and still sees clients one to one.

The bit you are quietly wondering

Questions people actually ask

What is Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming and how does it work?

It is a guided audio method that helps with the automatic mental patterns driving stress, anxiety and emotional overload. Rather than focusing on the behaviour you can see, it targets the response running underneath it, which is what keeps the behaviour coming back.

How does it help with stress and anxiety?

It helps with the automatic responses that keep tension and overwhelm running. Sessions support calmer regulation without asking you to revisit past events, which is why people find it easier to stay with than approaches that require retelling.

Is this just a sleep meditation?

No. Sessions can feel calming, and many people do fall asleep in them, but they are built to support lasting mental and emotional change rather than relaxation on its own.

Is Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming hypnosis?

Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming is not hypnosis. It uses a structured psychological framework aimed at the automatic response, delivered as guided audio. You stay aware and in control the whole way through, and it is designed to sit alongside anything else you already use.

What if I have tried hypnosis before and it did not work?

Having tried hypnosis before without it working is common among the people who come to Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming. It targets specific cognitive patterns using a structured framework, delivered as guided audio you listen to on your own.

What issues can this approach support?

Commonly stress, anxiety, sleep difficulties, emotional regulation, habits, confidence, performance and mindset. There are eleven pathways, each built around a different set of patterns.

Who can benefit from this approach?

People wanting focused, practical change without long term talk therapy, particularly where a specific pattern is affecting daily life.

Can it improve sleep quality?

Yes. By calming the mental responses that keep the system overactivated, sessions can help both getting to sleep and staying asleep.

How long does it take to see results?

Some people notice changes quickly while others find change develops more gradually. Individual experiences vary. We recommend listening consistently for at least 21 days.

Can it help with habit change?

Yes. It helps with the mental patterns that sustain a behaviour rather than asking you to override it with willpower, which is usually why habits come back.

Can it change or manipulate my memories?

No. It does not alter or implant memories. It helps with present day responses and forward change only.

Can it be combined with other therapies?

Yes. It sits alongside other therapeutic or wellness practices, including CBT, and plenty of people use it while already seeing someone.

Is this approach generally suitable for self-guided use?

Yes. Sessions are non invasive, forward focused, and built with safety and ethical practice as the priority. There is no reliving of past events.

Why should I choose this approach?

It offers a structured, focused method for change that keeps emotional strain low while building real world resilience. If nothing shifts, you cancel, and it has cost you nothing.
